State Licensing and Professional Credit Information
Many CEBS registrants use CEBS courses to meet licensing and other continuing professional education requirements. The following information is provided to give you a basic understanding of the continuing education credit available for completing a CEBS course. Credit hours and filing procedures vary by discipline and from state to state. Below is detailed information on the different types of credit available and the steps you will need to follow. Insurance Producers
Most CEBS courses are accepted for credit in states that require continuing education credit for insurance producers. The assigned hours of credit and the reporting procedures vary from state to state. Please read the Insurance CE—PROCTOR REQUIREMENTS—CEBS® Course Offerings document for important detailed information. For most states, an in-person proctor is required to complete a signed affidavit in order for CE credit to be administered/reported. You can download the form here. This requirement varies by state and we highly recommend that students contact the state governing body for complete rules and understanding regarding proctoring. The CEBS courses are approved in states as "correspondence courses" that utilize a textbook and study materials. This is important to note in your conversation with your governing body. Even though the exam is online, because the study materials are available offline, these courses require different rules around having an in-person proctor as it is not considered an online/e-learning course.
To request credit for passing an examination:
- Complete the Continuing Education Credit section of the CEBS Order Form. Make sure to indicate the state you are licensed in. Please update your license/NPN information as needed.
- A late fee will apply for late requests made after exam pass date.
- Credit will be issued for successfully completed exams no later than 30 days after the exam takes place. (Reporting requirements vary by state.)
Some state insurance boards require that self-study correspondence exams be taken in a proctored (monitored) environment. It is your responsibility to confirm with your licensing board the CE rules that apply to your license before completing an application for a virtual exam. The Proctorio extension is not a proctor for CE purposes. The Proctorio software is utilized to ensure the exam integrity and efficacy for all students. If your state board requires a proctored exam, you MUST complete the entire Continuing Education Monitor Affidavit and return it per the instructions on the form. Failure to return a required form will result in no credit being reported.
Proctor requirements may vary by state, but in general an in-person proctor must meet these requirements:
- Must be over 18 years old
- Must be a disinterested third-party with no financial interest in promoting a successful examination result
- May be a co-worker provided there is no direct reporting relationship
- Must not be anyone in direct line of authority with the examinee (not an employee, employer, or supervisor)
- Must not have a family interest in the success of the examinee
- Must not be a teacher or former pupil
- Must commit to being in the room with the examinee for the entire virtual online exam.

If an individual course or state does not appear in the dropdown menu, the course is not approved in your state and credit CANNOT be administered. If you are seeking insurance continuing education credit, never take your exam until you are certain your license state has approved the course AND your request for continuing education credit has been processed. Please note the date of expiration. A "Yes" listed under the Proctored column indicates an In Person Proctor and a completed Continuing Education Monitor Affidavit are required for administration of CE credits.

CPAs
The International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans is not registered with the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA) as a sponsor of self-study courses. The CEBS self-study format does not meet NASBA standards for interactive self-study.
Whether credit can be earned for CEBS courses when self-studied and the examination is passed would be subject to the individual state boards of accountancy regulations. Contact your state board of accountancy to determine if self-study courses are eligible for continuing education credit.
Attorneys
Credit is contingent upon whether the state granting credit accepts self-study courses or whether they were attended at a college/university. In either case, attorneys generally are more successful in receiving CLE credit if they apply for credit on an individual basis and explain how the content of the CEBS course relates to their practice of law.
Enrolled Actuaries
The International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans is an accepted sponsor under Section 20, CFR Part 901(g)(2)(iii) of the final Rules and Regulations governing those enrolled to perform actuarial services under ERISA. It is the actuary's responsibility to identify "core" and "noncore" credit hours.
